INTERVIEWS

Interview with Pÿlon (SZ) an Epic Doom Metal band from Switzerland existing from 2002.
OCTOBER  7 2011

Pÿlon: Currently working on a new album "The Harrowing Of Hell" L R :Matt Brand:Vocals Guitar  Andrea Tinner :Drums Jan Thomas Bass, keys

Jan: It is interesting you draw such a radical comparison, but I think it may go in the opposite direction. You see, Th Eternal Wedding Band (2006) was written with Tinu, our groove-focused drummer who also sang most of the album. Doom (2009), on the other hand, was written by Matt (g) and me (b) alone, so there was automatically less groove and more atmospheric emotion. Andrea joined us on drums for Armoury Of God (2011), so a harder edge came in musically, but Matt sang very melodically which accounts for the progressive contradiction.

For The Harrowing Of Hell (planned for 2012), Andy La Morte has joined us on guitar, and with him come both metal and new types of harmonies. Also, Matt uses his new freedom from constant guitar-playing and sings against the riffs, so the whole combination gets a bit more punch!

Matt: well, I think we play the way that we can, haha. So there will be maybe little changes in our music in the future. But for the next album, it will be in the same traditional doom vein like AOG. The only thing new on the next album is that we record without a click track for the first time but musically it stays the same, epic doom metal.

And that it will be released as vinyl only!! This is a big change for us!! We prefer to change the format of the medium than the musical style, haha.

Andy LaMorte:The new guitarist for Pylon from Disobedience Band

Jan: He is our incredibly enthusiastic new rhythm and lead guitarist, and a total team player. Because he has his own band, Disobedience (www.disobedience.ch), to play his own songs, he takes part in the creation of the songs as a true team player and without any trace of egotistical demands. His focus is always on what is best for the song. It is a pleasure to jam with him and no words are needed because we all seem to be on the same line musically.

Nonetheless and this is not meant as a slight to Andy , we are proud to have got another friend of ours to finally, finally record some guest solos on the new tracks. This is Remo from Sin Starlett, a man with an inimitable feeling for the flow and emotion for a solo which tells its own story within a song.

Matt: Yes, Andy came to help us so that I can put more time and emotions into my voice. Sometimes it is too hard to sing what I want while playing the guitar. So he has to take over playing the rhythm. We knew him already for years and he is a great doom metal lover so I only had to ask if he would like to join.He has already written a great song for Pÿlon which will be featured on the next album. And we hope that he will stay in the band for a long time!

Andy:I joined Pÿlon when they finished Armoury Of God in early 2011 directly for the The Harrowing Of Hell sessions. Since then, I never regretted the decision to play in a second band because it is a great experience with these guys. I am pleased to be able to get involved with the compositions of Jan and Matt and to share with the guys my love for music.

Pÿlon - Armoury Of God  CD

Pylon - Armoury Of God

Jan:Ooh, you have got a really good set of eyes! Yes, I think that the stoner traces are most clearly noticeable on the album Th Eternal Wedding Band which feels uninhibited and a little bit nasty in places just the way it should! In particular Matt was a great fan of Kyuss which could be felt on that album and on our debut, Natural Songbirth (2004).

Some of the coolest Swiss stoner/sludge bands seem not to be active anymore, such as Corwen and Pornolé. To be honest, I am not aware of any other stoner bands in this country. Perhaps you are right and it was just a hype. (This gives me hope about the abomination known as hardcore/nu-metal/cross-over.)

Matt :Well, I created this design when we played more songs like Anaconda or Checkmate 64 on TEWB. I like stoner rock but not so much as classic doom metal. I know only the same local bands Jan does and I dont know if there are many of them in Switzerland. There are lots of bands playing this Sweden neurosis sound which is slow with very ugl

Matt:I think you will have to judge if the new album is more heavy than AOG I think until now (we already recorded 3 songs for it) it sounds typical Pÿlon. We have some more heavy riffs here and there, but the epic, atmospheric and prog touch will stay! And we will have a cover of a very well-known track but in Pÿlon style, in a doom version, yeah!

The production style remains in the 80s vein. I dont want to sound more modern. Well, all tracks are not completely arranged yet, so maybe there will be some more different elements from Andy? The future will tell. I have already written most of the songs, some are very old actually. So I first want to record all of these old songs before trying to explore new dimensions!

We will have some more spiritual lyrics on the new album, this will be a difference.

Andy:The sound of Pÿlon always was multi-faceted but each of their albums has its own character. With the new album, we definitively not want to copy the past. The Harrowing Of Hell will be 100% Pÿlon of course, but with its very own character ... and I feel great to be a part of it!

Jan:Incidentally, it was just for our latest song that we called one riff the Maiden riff and then realized that there is one of those in each of the songs so far. Of course, there are also Matts massive doom riffs and, after all, you never know how any passage will sound and feel until the additions such as keyboards, backing vocals and solos are in place. Cruel chord changes can suddenly sound harmonious and soothing, such as DeadLove on the album Doom, and a nice jam can be perceived as particularly strong, such as Death Is All Around from Armoury Of God. All in all, there will be an honest-sounding continuity in the sound of The Harrowing Of Hell and we are looking forward to releasing our very first vinyl album in about a years time. Hopefully, you and the Stonerrock.gr readers will also like what you will hear!
